SEO for medical practices: how the patient who is already searching finds you

Article written byRoger de Oca · rogerdeoca.com

A patient looking for a doctor almost never starts with a referral. They start with a phone: "dermatologist near me", "pediatrician that takes my insurance", "primary care in Tampa that speaks Spanish". And in that search they decide, within seconds, who to call.

That makes a practice website more than a business card. It is where that patient checks whether you are the answer to what they asked. And Google only shows you if your site gives it reasons to believe you are.

How patients actually search

Medical searches come in three shapes, and each asks something different of the site.

By specialty and place. "Cardiologist in Clearwater". Here Google looks at your Google Business Profile, your category, your area, and whether your site confirms all of it clearly. This is the most valuable search and the most contested.

By problem. "Heel pain when I wake up". The patient does not know yet which specialist they need. If your site has a page explaining that problem and what you do about it, you can be the first name they see. Almost no local practice writes those pages.

By practical conditions. "Doctor who takes Florida Blue", "same-day appointment", "pediatrician in Spanish". The patient knows what they need and filters on the practical. If that information is not visible on your site, Google cannot match you, even if you qualify.

What Google looks at on a practice website

That it says clearly what you are, where, and for whom. Specialty, cities you serve, languages, insurance. Not buried in a paragraph: visible, in headings and in plain text.

That the information matches everywhere. Exact practice name, phone and area identical on the site, on Google Business Profile, in medical directories and in insurer directories. A small discrepancy, a different suffix in the name, an old phone number in one directory, costs trust.

That it loads fast on a phone. Most doctor searches happen on mobile, many of them with some anxiety behind them. A site that takes six seconds loses the patient and tells Google the answer did not help.

That it is accessible. Enough contrast, readable text, keyboard navigable. Beyond being a legal obligation in the United States, it is a quality signal, and a meaningful share of your patients need it.

That the content carries authority. In health, Google is especially careful about who it shows. Content signed by the physician, with visible credentials, on conditions that physician actually treats, weighs far more than generic text.

Google Business Profile: half the job

For a practice, the Google listing often decides more than the site does in local search. Correct and specific category, real hours, a phone that gets answered, current photos of the office and the team, services listed, and reviews answered professionally, never arguing and never revealing anything about a patient.

The site and the listing reinforce each other. The listing puts you on the map. The site convinces the patient to call.

What I can and cannot do

I can make your site fast, clear, accessible and consistent with your listing, with pages per specialty and per condition, written for the patient and reviewed by you. I can keep all of that current every month, which is where most practices fall behind. That steady work, month after month, is what my SEO service actually consists of.

I cannot promise you the top spot. Nobody can. And I will not publish clinical content in your name without your review: in health, what the site says, you sign.

Where to start

Search your own specialty and city from a phone, the way a patient would. Notice which zone you appear in and which you do not. If you are not on the map, start with the Google listing. If you are on the map but not in the organic list, start with the site, and with what a medical practice website has to prove before a patient calls.

And if the site already looks good but the phone stays quiet, this guide explains why. To understand what gets done month to month on a site that does rank, here is the work in detail.
