Seven signs your website needs an honest review

Article written byRoger de Oca · rogerdeoca.com

A website almost never fails all at once. It falls behind quietly, while the owner is looking at other things, until one day they wonder why the phone never rings from the internet. These are the seven signs I see over and over when reviewing practice and local business sites, and how to check each one yourself.

1. It was built and nobody has looked at it since

If your site launched two or three years ago and only a photo or two has changed since, it is almost certain that today it loads worse, ranks worse and says things that are no longer true. Google changed, your competitors moved, and the site stayed where it was. Check: recall the date of the last real change. If you cannot, that is your answer.

2. You do not show up when you search for yourself on a phone

Search your specialty or service with your city, from a phone rather than the office computer. If you are not on the map or the first page, everyone making that search is calling someone else. And it is not because you do not buy ads: it is because something on the site or in your Google listing is not giving Google a reason to show you. Which of the two it is decides what gets fixed first, and that is where search engine optimization starts, not with a bigger ad budget.

3. Visitors arrive and nobody calls

If you have analytics, look at how many people come in and how many contact you. If a hundred come in and one writes, the problem is not traffic, it is what happens inside. It is almost always one of three things: the phone number is not in sight, the first screen does not say what you do, or the form scares people off.

4. You are embarrassed to send the link

A more reliable signal than it sounds. If you would rather a new patient or customer find you through a referral than through your site, you already know the site does not represent you. And if it embarrasses you, it tells the visitor exactly the same thing.

5. It is slow and you have stopped noticing

Open your site on a phone using mobile data, not the office wifi, and count. If more than three seconds pass before you see anything useful, you are losing a share of your visitors before they read a word. Many owners no longer notice because they always open it from the same place with the best connection.

6. Nobody explains what is done with what you pay

If you pay for maintenance, hosting or "SEO" every month and could not say what was done last month, there are two possibilities: nothing is being done, or it is being done and nobody tells you. Both are a problem. A well maintained site comes with a report you can read, which is the point of a monthly maintenance plan: you should be able to see what was done, and why it was worth doing.

7. Whoever built it is gone

The nephew, the agency that closed, the freelancer who stopped answering. A site with nobody in charge is a site nobody will fix when something breaks, and something always breaks: a form that stops sending, a certificate that expires, an update that never gets applied.

What to do with these signs

One of these signs means it is worth a look. Three or more mean it is worth a look now. And a real look means measuring, not guessing: actual speed, what Google sees, what the visitor sees, what your neighboring competitors are saying.

That is exactly what a website audit does: a full review with evidence and a plan ordered by impact, useful even if you later decide to fix things with someone else. If you want to know exactly what it checks before requesting one, here is the detail.
